Tom Morello is back with a new solo album. The legendary guitarist from Rage Against The Machine will release Everyone Gets Everything They Want on September 25 via Mom + Pop Music. To accompany the announcement, he unveils a new single, “Date Night,” after having already shared “Adjourn It” in recent weeks!
This first truly solo rock record from Morello is shaping up to be among his most politically charged works. Faithful to his activist DNA, the musician addresses themes such as the rise of fascism, immigrant rights, and global political upheavals, all carried by his explosive guitar playing, mixing massive riffs, virtuosic solos, and uncompromising lyrics. Production was handled by Tyler Smyth, Carl Restivo, Zakk Cervini, Dan Carey and Sam Nelson Harris.
The album will feature several high-profile guests, including Serj Tankian (System Of A Down), Kneecap and Beartooth. Another notable guest: Roman Morello, the guitarist’s 15-year-old son. Having already appeared on stage with his father over the past three years, he writes or co-writes five tracks on the album and brings several riffs and solos.
The new single “Date Night” tells the true story of Truus and Freddie Oversteegen and their friend Hannie Schaft, three young Dutch resistance fighters who served as spies, saboteurs and assassins against the Nazis during World War II. Taking advantage of their youth to slip past checks, they took part in weapon transports, rail sabotage, saving Jewish children, and clandestine operations against Nazi officers. Hannie Schaft was ultimately captured, tortured, and executed without ever betraying her comrades.
About the track, Tom Morello states: “I write anti-racist songs for anti-racists. I write anti-fascist songs for anti-fascists. And I write anti-Nazi songs for anti-Nazis. “Date Night” is truly a song that asks: ‘Which side are you on?’ If that offends you, do the math. By the way, Roman Morello wrote the devastating riff for this track.”
Prior to this, Morello had unveiled “Adjourn It,” in collaboration with Serj Tankian and Roman Morello. The track denounces the rise of racism and anti-immigrant rhetoric, while its video features clips from the 1954 film Salt Of The Earth, echoing its message of resistance to discrimination and injustice.
